– Existing concrete support must be in good condition before resurfacing.
– Do not obstruct weep holes when working along brick walls
– Most surface stains are due to water infiltration.
– We recommend protecting resurfacing work from rain for 48 hours.
1- Preparation of existing concrete
We suggest using Mapei’s Planitop XS for any necessary repairs on the existing surface before installation. This product can be applied as a thin layer and up to 10cm (4”) per application.
Let cure 28 days before recovering.
2- To glue the caps and risers
We suggest using King’s MasonBond 400. (+/-30 sq.ft./ bag)
– MasonBond 400 is a polymer-modified mortar specially designed to use with cultured bricks and stones, and granite pavers and slabs on horizontal surfaces. For optimum performance, the substrate and mortar temperature should be between 5 and 38C and maintained in this range for 72 hours after mortar application.
– Construction adhesives (polyurethane based) are also recommended.
Lime-based mortars are recommended for slate, limestone and sandstone applications. We suggest pre-mixed 2-1-9 type “S” mortar for its superior adhesion, increased impermeability and excellent resistance to freeze-thaw cycles. Use MasonBond for concrete pavers.
4- Filling the joints
– We recommend King’s 2-1-9 type “S” mortar mainly for its autogenius curing properties and increased impermeability. (+/- 100 li.ft. X 3/8” X 6cm / bag).
– MasonBond 400 is also a great option due to its waterproofness. Use with caution.
– RP polymer sand was created specifically for concrete overlay systems.
To avoid humidity-based problems and efflorescence secretion, we recommend applying a water repellent sealant 30 to 60 days after completing the project. This way you will avoid water penetration under the slabs which can cause them to unglue and propagate efflorescence onto the surface.
